The Boys Basketball Program is designed to develop athletes at every level, from 4th-6th grade through Junior High, Junior Varsity, and Varsity.
4th-6th Grade Boys Basketball
The 4th-6th Grade Boys Basketball Program is designed to introduce young athletes to the fundamentals of basketball in a fun and supportive environment. This is the perfect opportunity for players to begin developing their skills while enjoying the game.
- Fundamentals and Skill Building: Coaches focus on teaching the basic skills of basketball, including shooting, dribbling, passing, defense, and teamwork. This foundational instruction sets the stage for future success in higher levels of play.
- Introductory Competitions: Athletes participate in local games where they can gain valuable experience in a friendly, competitive setting. These games help players develop confidence and excitement for the sport.
- Teamwork and Sportsmanship: Young athletes learn the importance of working together as a team, fostering strong communication, and supporting each other both on and off the court.
Junior High Boys Basketball (7th-8th Grade)
The Junior High Boys Basketball Program (7th-8th grade) focuses on building a strong foundation of basketball skills and introducing athletes to more competitive play. This level prepares athletes for the transition into Junior Varsity and Varsity basketball.
- Skill Development and Strategy: Junior High athletes refine their fundamental skills while learning more advanced strategies, including offensive plays, defensive schemes, and team dynamics. Coaches work closely with players to improve their basketball IQ and understanding of the game.
- Competitive Play: Junior High players participate in local games and tournaments, providing a competitive environment where athletes can test their skills and experience real-game situations.
- Team Growth and Leadership: Athletes are encouraged to support one another and demonstrate leadership on and off the court. Junior High players begin to take on more responsibility as role models for younger players, building a strong team mentality.
Junior Varsity Boys Basketball
The Junior Varsity Boys Basketball Program serves as a stepping stone for athletes preparing to compete at the Varsity level. This team provides a more competitive environment where athletes continue to hone their skills while developing a greater understanding of team play and strategy.
- Competitive Play and Growth: Junior Varsity athletes compete in a variety of games and tournaments, where they have the opportunity to challenge themselves and develop their skills in a competitive setting. The goal is to prepare athletes for future Varsity-level competition.
- Skill Refinement and Strategy: Coaches work on further developing each athlete's individual skills and basketball IQ, helping them understand the nuances of the game and preparing them for more intense competition.
- Leadership and Teamwork: As Junior Varsity players, athletes are expected to step into leadership roles, mentoring younger players and helping to build a positive team culture. Teamwork is emphasized as the foundation for success, with players working together to achieve common goals.
Varsity Boys Basketball
The Varsity Boys Basketball Program at Texas Wind is for athletes who are committed to competing at a high level. This program is highly competitive and offers athletes the chance to showcase their skills in the most intense competitions, with the goal of achieving team success and personal growth.
- High-Level Competition: Varsity athletes play in a competitive league with the opportunity to participate in regional and state-level tournaments. The team competes for championships, with a focus on both individual and team achievement.
- Advanced Coaching and Skill Development: Varsity players receive high-level coaching to refine their techniques, improve their basketball IQ, and enhance their physical conditioning. Athletes work on advanced plays, individual skills, and strategies that will help them succeed in pressure-filled game situations.
- Team Leadership and Accountability: Varsity players are expected to lead by example, setting the standard for work ethic, sportsmanship, and accountability both on and off the court. Leadership skills are a key component of the Varsity experience, and athletes are encouraged to step up as role models for younger players.
- Playoff and Tournament Opportunities: Depending on the team’s success during the regular season, Varsity athletes have the opportunity to advance to playoffs and state tournaments, competing for the ultimate title.

Season Information
High School (9th-12th)
Winter Season begins in October and ends in February
Junior High (7th-8th)
Winter Season begins in October and ends in February.
4th-6th Grade League
Winter season begins in December and ends in March.

Location and Practices
Practices and Home Games are at our home game gym located at 1100 East Lake Shore Drive
High School (9th-12th): Plan to have practices and games 4-5 days a week. Practices are in the evenings Monday-Friday.
Junior High (7th-8th): Plan to have practices or games 3 days per week.
4th-6th Grade League: Plan to have 1-2 practices and/or games per week. Practice days vary per season and depend on coach availability.

Game Information
High School (Varsity & JV)
The Varsity and Junior Varsity teams play a regular High School season against competitive opponents. This includes tournaments. TAIAO Regionals/States: Depending on the team’s performance throughout the regular season, the basketball team has the chance to participate in regionals, competing for a state title.
Junior High
THe Junior High Basketball team (grades 7th-8th) plays a full junior high season. End-of-Year Junior High Tournament (TAIAO Regionals): Our highest level basketball team will conclude their season with the TAIAO Basketball Tournament.
4th-6th Grade
The 4th-6th Grade basketball program consists of an 8-game season of local matches, where younger athletes can gain experience, develop their skills, and grow in confidence. The focus at this level is on learning the fundamentals of basketball in a supportive and non-competitive environment.

Age Requirements
Texas Wind is a member of TAIAO. TAIAO requirements for ages are as follows:
JUNIOR HIGH SPORTS AGE REQUIREMENTS (Grades 6th-8th):
Will reach their 10th birthday prior to May 31st in the calendar year of participation; and,
b. Will not have reached their 14th birthday prior to May 31st of the same year.
HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS AGE REQUIREMENTS (Grades 9-12):
If an athlete is currently homeschooled then you need to follow these guidelines for the 2025-2026 season for High school sports:
- a student will be considered a High School student who is 14 years of age or older as of May 31s in the calendar year of participation. Examples:
- a. A player cannot turn 19 years of age before May 31st of the calendar year participating
- b. Player A turns 14 on May 30th 2025. Player A will be a High School player when the Fall 2025-2026 season sports begin.
- c. Player B turns 14 on June 5th , 2025. Player B will be considered a middle school player when the Fall 2025-2026 season sports begin school year.
- d. Player C, (a Senior) can not turn 19 years of age during his/her final year.
High School athletes have FOUR years of eligibility.


Frequently Asked Questions
Are there tryouts?
We do not cut players from our teams once they are registered, however there will be a placement tryout to put them on teams.
